Stefano Mai, Councilor for Agriculture of the Liguria region, has decided to respond to the note of the Italian Farmers Confederation (CIA) regarding the damage caused by wild boars. Here are his words: “My councilor is well aware of the problem that represents the invasive presence of wild boars and ungulates in general on the Ligurian territory. As I have already had the opportunity to say, I remember that we have launched, in 2016, the legislation on the defense of the fund, which already allows professional farmers, farm owners and holders of hunting gun permits, the possibility of culling ungulates in their plots, after having communicated it and after the verification of the regional supervisory body.
We have also approved a new rule, after the challenge by the old government, to be able to use hunters, with a training course specific, to support regional supervision. The training courses have started and soon we will have hunters qualified to carry out this task. Of course the times of bureaucracy and the challenge of our previous regional law they prevented it from being able to intervene with the hoped-for punctuality to crush the problem, in the interest of our farmers, of soil protection and public safety. Before the government challenge, in addition to the 80 provincial police officers, we had about 8 thousand hunters which gave fundamental support in the control beats.
After the government provision, which declared our rule unconstitutional, we were left with only 23 agents at the regional level, decidedly insufficient to manage the situation, despite the great commitment and availability. In the end, I welcome the proposal for a crisis table to tackle a problem with determination which has been dragging on for too long in Liguria, but I expect teamwork from all the parties involved and effective proposals ".
