MEP Andrea Zanoni of IdV and president of the LAC comments on the work of the European Commission on the issue of the Sardinian hunting calendar.
The European Commission will assess what to do regarding the breach of the Birds Directive by the Sardinia Region for the approval of the 2011/2012 hunting calendar. Andrea Zanoni (IdV): "Sardinia is added to the black list of outlawed hunting regions after Veneto and Lombardy". "The Commission will assess all available information and determine any appropriate measures to ensure compliance with the relevant provisions of the Birds Directive."
This is the response of the EU Commissioner for the Environment Janez Poto? Nik to the question presented by Andrea Zanoni, MEP IdV, on the violation of the Birds Directive by the Sardinia Region for the approval of the 2011/2012 hunting calendar without the mandatory opinion of the ISPRA Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research.
"The Commission is aware of the fact that the Sardinia Region has approved the hunting calendar for 2011/2012, establishing, for certain species, hunting periods longer than those required by national legislation - reads the Commissioner's reply - the Commission deduces , also from the text of the aforementioned decisions of the regional and national administrative courts, that this decision was adopted by the Region of Sardinia without the opinion of the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, which is required by national legislation ".
In fact, despite the decision of the Council of State of 21 December 2011 which ordered the suspension of the Sardinian regional hunting calendar, the Autonomous Region has also set the calendar for the 2011-2012 hunting season, with a decree of the Environment Defense Councilor of 23 December 2011. and by decree of the Environment Defense Councilor of 4 January 2012, again without the required binding opinion of ISPRA.
“All this is in open violation not only of national law but also of European law, in particular article 7, paragraph 4 of the Birds Directive, which establishes the limits and conditions of hunting activities”, explains Zanoni. "After Veneto and Lombardy, Sardinia has been added to the black list of regions outlawed on hunting - adds the MEP - Unfortunately, the risk is always the same: millions of poor dead birds and penalties to be paid in Brussels".
"The time has come for our regional representatives to stop seeking easy consents with gifts to the hunters' lobby - concludes Zanoni - and rather begin to base their legitimacy on good policies in compliance with national and EU legislation".
