Data from 2023
The Province of Mantua has published the data relating to nutria catches during 2023. A total of 52.318 specimens were eliminated last year, equal to 211.590 kilos disposed of. The data confirms the downward trend of the last two years. In fact, we went from the peak of around 67.000 specimens in 2021 to 62.000 in 2022, with 2023 therefore closing with around 10.000 fewer nutrias caught: «It is clear – explains Alberto Cortesi, president of Confagricoltura Mantova – that we are decidedly far from the goal of eradication. In fact, in order to start thinking about implementing it, we would have to eliminate at least 100.000 nutrias every year, a figure currently impossible to reach. I join the appeal launched by the provincial administration to the municipalities that make very few, if not zero, catches: everyone's help is needed."
A look at the various municipalities
Taking a look at the individual municipalities, Roncoferraro stands out (second in 2022) with 3.183 catches. In second place Sabbioneta (fifth in 2022) with 2.589 catches, while Borgo Virgilio completes the podium (at the top in 2022) with 2.534 nutrias eliminated. Also in the top ten are Bagnolo San Vito (2.258), Gonzaga (2.229), Villimpenta (2.101), San Giorgio Bigarello (2.065), Castel D'Ario (2.053), Asola (1.930) and Suzzara (1.848). After years at "zero" quota, the municipality of Mantua also enters the ranking, having disposed of 2023 animals during 625. First signs also from Borgocarbonara, which disposed of 261 nutria and recovered after several years of stopping catches.
The negative ranking
As usual, the "black shirts" are also assigned for the municipalities with zero nutria eliminated. A step back for Commessaggio and Medole, who closed 2022 with, respectively, 279 and 260 catches. Cavriana, Magnacavallo, Monzambano, Poggio Rusco, Pomponesco, Ponti sul Mincio, Porto Mantovano, Rivarolo Mantovano, San Giacomo delle Segnate, San Giovanni del Dosso, Solferino and Sustinente are confirmed in this negative ranking (source: Confagricoltura Mantova).
