A singular appearance in Gandino Valley. The hunter Biagio Guadagno sighted a hermit ibis in Cirano, a small fraction of Gandino in the Gandino Valley, sending Federcaccia Lombardia a photo of the lucky meeting, an encouraging signal for a globally endangered species. As part of a European Union project (LIFE + Biodiversity), with partners in Austria, Italy and Germany, the species has been reintroduced in Europe. The project is based on a feasibility study developed as a result of an experience of 10 years, developed as part of the conservation project of the species by the Waldrappteam group.
The key aspects concern the implementation of extensive measures against illegal hunting of the Northern Bald Ibis in particular in Italy. During the ten-year feasibility study around 60% of all losses (around 50 hermit ibises) were attributed to poaching in Italy. Consequently, the project includes extensive measures for the sustainable reduction of these losses. Federcaccia and many species conservation organizations have supported this project for years (source: FIDC).
