A few weeks ago the municipal councilor delegated to Agriculture, John Martellotta, had sent a registered letter to Puglia region and trade associations, asking for a derogation from the hunting for starlings, as a minimum system of defense by farmers of the agricultural crops of the territory. A first response came on July 25, when the Coldiretti Puglia informed Martellotta of the favorable opinion expressed by the Regional Wildlife Hunting Technical Committee, regarding the withdrawal in derogation of the transfer.
"The reasons given are focused not only on the damage that the reversal causes crops and agricultural farm structures, but also on hygiene and safety very compromised by the massive presence of the bird - reads the acknowledgment note of the general manager of Coldiretti Puglia, Angelo Corsetti, who continues -. Coldiretti Puglia has also proposed to hunt corvids, in the hunting season 2019/2020, without 'game bag limit', in order to counteract and reduce the damage caused, especially by magpies, to crops and other 'useful' birds for agriculture ".
The opinions expressed by Regional Technical Committee, although mandatory, they are not binding. For this reason, a specific provision is now awaited from the regional council, which will decide whether to take it into account totally or only partially.
