A project supported by the Province of Sassari aims to dedicate land to certain crops that can favor the natural habitat of wild animals in order to "build a new hunting awareness".
The ambitious project called "Crops to lose" was conceived by the GANS, Lovers Group of the Nobile Stazionale, of Ozieri (SS) and was presented in recent days receiving the support of the municipal administration and the Province of Sassari.
According to Michele Sanna of GANS it is “A bet for investing energy and resources in an attempt to improve the natural habitats of the so-called noble sedentary game, such as the Sardinian hare or the partridge, within free territories for hunting and not in reserved areas as usually happens ".
According to the project, small plots of land of little agricultural interest should be identified distributed more or less uniformly throughout the municipal territory and especially where game is present; these lands should then be cultivated starting from the sowing of particular crops.
Sanna further explains, “Crops do barley, wheat and oats intended exclusively for game with the aim of improving its habitat and favoring its sustenance and reproduction possibilities. The cost of the entire operation will be contained thanks to the identification of areas granted free of charge and the contribution of the association's volunteers ”.
According to the head of the GANS, "The populations of hares and partridges have reached historic lows and it is said that wild species are going through difficult periods due to the increase in natural enemies and the continuous transformation of the territory by man; so much so that even among the "shotguns" there are those who argue that it is appropriate to suspend their hunting for a few years ".
Finally Sanna concludes, “We, on the other hand, argue that it is time to experience this sport with a different spirit and that the hunter should not be just a predator but a subject who has the duty to work to defend and preserve this ancient and traditional passion ".
