It was a day entirely dedicated to hunting, to the culture and hunting training held in the headquarters of the provincial Federcaccia of Rieti last Saturday, September 12, strongly desired and organized by the president Fiorenzo Panfilo with the collaboration of the board of directors and with the valid support of Federcaccia Lazio.
At the center of the initiative is one of the game that most influences the choices and decisions, including political ones, relating to the Italian and Rieti hunting world: the Boar.
Dr. Giorgia Romeo from the National Wildlife Office of Federcaccia came to talk about it. The zoologist, who already boasts a long experience in the field of wildlife, got the attention of the numerous present for the entire duration of the training day.
From the morphology of the wild boar to its eating habits, from the main causes of its demographic expansion to the correct hunting management for the containment of the species, especially in terms of damage to crops, during the morning Dr. Romeo addressed the subject at 360 degrees, often interacting with the interventions - many - of the audience.
It is interesting, from a management and hunting point of view, to note how in Tuscany, for example, the minimum number of participants in a hunt (typical wild boar hunting trip carried out with the aid of follow-up dogs) is of 18 units, a number that in Umbria rises further up to 25: in Lazio, on the contrary, seven hunters can already tabulate an entire wooded area and dissolve the hounds, which practically makes impossible to manage the wild boar and, moreover, it takes away a lot of territory from other hunters and users of the woods of different nature. The hope is that at least the Rieti ATCs can intervene to change the specific regulation of wild boar hunting.
At the turn of the lunch break, the lesson concerning the recovery of the injured hoofed animal by the track dog was also very popular, a practice very well rooted in the northern and central-northern regions, but still half-known in Lazio, where despite a massive presence of roe deer the selection hunt has not yet begun.
It is important to keep in mind the fact that there are many wounded animals, even during a wild boar hunt, who go to die who knows where without the hunter realizing their injury: to have a good retriever, equipped with a dog. from trace (Bavarian and Hanoverian are the most used breeds), allows you to recover the affected head, put an end to its suffering in a short time and not send the meat to waste, with all the health risks that this would entail. A hunting culture that, in Lazio, is still lacking, and that Federcaccia wants to establish itself within a reasonably short time.
Finally, in the afternoon, Dr. Romeo widely captured the attention of the many present with a theme dear to all hunters: necessity, convenience and problems of repopulation. The most suitable techniques, those most compatible with the territory, the quality of the animals to be used and how to pre-environment them: the whole chapter dedicated to repopulation, treated with extreme competence by the expert of the Fidc Permanent Fauna Office, has literally displaced the "pupils" , who interacted for a long time with questions and observations.
As in Italy there are 60 million coaches of the national football team, so in the hunting world each one, unfortunately, sometimes feels "arrived" and all-rounder: but the reality is that you have to study, and continuously update yourself, if you want to get results valid with a view to biodiversity and correct management of hunters' money.
