Hunting: the environmentalists of Legambiente Lazio and Lipu Birdlife Italia and the Italian Geographic Society do not like the 2013-14 Hunting Calendar of the Lazio Region, “hunting allowed for 14 species in a bad state of conservation”.
A few days after the approval of the Hunting Calendar of the Lazio Region valid for the 2013-2014 season, the environmentalists of Legambiente Lazio and Lipu Birdlife Italia and the Italian Geographic Society immediately oppose it with their own note. “The just approved hunting calendar is a real gift to the hunting world. We will launch media tam tam against this calendar and legal interventions ”. Hunting 14 species in a bad state of conservation, hunting in the period of pre-nuptial migration, no conservation plan for the species in distress: this is the essence of the hunting calendar that the Lazio Region is preparing to deliberate, pursuing the same hunting policy adopted by the previous administration. It would be incredible that the Administration that is focusing a lot on the sustainability of policies makes such a heavy and compromising choice ”.
A policy aimed at satisfying the requests of hunting associations as a priority, placing them before the general needs, therefore of all citizens, of protection and conservation of fauna. The list of huntable species of the Lazio hunting calendar includes species that according to official scientific data are considered to have an unfavorable conservation status and therefore should be protected rather than hunted. On this point, article 1 of law 157/92, which lays down the rules for the protection of wildlife and regulates hunting, is very clear: "The State, the regions and the autonomous provinces, without new or greater charges for public finance, adopt the necessary measures to maintain or adapt the populations of all bird species "and again:" The exercise of hunting is allowed as long as it does not conflict with the need for conservation of wildlife and does not cause damage effective to agricultural production.
Even on the timing of the hunting season, the Lazio Region makes further concessions to the hunting world: there are 18 species that will be hunted during the pre-nuptial migration, that is, in that delicate phase during which the birds move from the wintering areas to the breeding areas. . On the need to adjust hunting times, ISPRA, the national scientific authority, has also expressed itself clearly. a significant restriction of the opening and closing dates of the hunt. Basically we are faced with an unpleasant act, which makes fun of the law, rules and institutions, but which also constitutes objective damage to that unavailable heritage of the community represented by wild animals.
The Lazio Region repents and takes a step back by adapting the Hunting Calendar to the indications coming from ISPRA, also relaunching a path of wildlife policy that must be put in place and not carrying out any pre-opening that in the very first days of September, this year more of the others it would collide with a tourist season still in full swing and with the species under the strong pressure from the very high atmospheric temperatures to which we are now accustomed. Otherwise, we will start a media tam tam to denounce the bad behavior of the Region, and a series of legal actions to re-establish the rules.
