At l 'Arosio Ornithological Observatory (Como) of the FEIN (European Foundation Il Nibbio) two very interesting catches were made in the last ten days of September. The first was that of a Accordion, ringed with an ISPRA ring on the 21st of last month. The second refers instead to a Black Woodpecker, to be precise, an adult male ringed five days later.
Going into more detail of the two events, this is the second organ captured at this Lombard station: the last one dated five years ago, on 25 October 2012, when a male bird was ringed. As for the Black Woodpecker, on the contrary, the species had never been observed in Arosio and therefore we must speak of the first ringing ever.
This woodpecker is also species number 128 observed or ringed at the scientific facility. The study of both is however fundamental for the post-nuptial migration. In fact, the passage of the Organ means that there is a shift towards territories south of the range, while that of the Woodpecker testifies to the expansion that the species is having. for ten years now. The range of the latter is moving towards the plain with local wintering and nesting.
