Thanks to the denunciation of some hunters, the men of the State Forestry Corps were able to defeat a real band of poachers who operated in the province by illegally hunting ungulates and protected fauna species. Following the investigations carried out, the Forestry identified and reported ten poachers, coming from the provinces of Grosseto, Florence, Arezzo, Siena, who as a team hunted at night, without a license, with guns detained illegally and in areas where hunting is prohibited.
Among the preys preferred by poachers, wild boar, red deer, fallow deer and roe deer; during the operation, the men of the Forestry found about 200 kilos of frozen meat belonging to various species of wildlife preserved in various freezers, in vacuum packs with relative labels at the homes of the suspects; at the home of one of them, in the garage of a 51-year-old Florentine, a wild boar and a fallow deer were found hanging by their hind legs from the ceiling and ready to be slaughtered, as well as knives and cleavers for meat processing.
During the searches, 95 embalmed trophies were also found, eight of which endangered fauna specimens protected by the “CITES” legislation; the Forestale has in fact ascertained that the poachers, after slaughtering the culled animals, froze the meat for subsequent sale to the private market and exhibited the trophies obtained from it.
Also found 45 hunting weapons including rifles and carbines of various caliber with hundreds of ammunition, two crossbows with relative darts and in particular a rifle to which a torch was handcrafted to be able to hunt at night. All the weapons, ammunition, meat and killed items found during the operation were seized by poachers who were reported on the loose to answer for various crimes.
