THEFedercaccia Bird Migration Office invited all the hunters involved in the collection of the turtle dove to collaborate in the project that foresees the collection of wings. For some years now, the wild dove it is declining significantly and the species has become “almost threatened” according to the standards of the European Union.
The species must therefore be studied and investigated if the intention is to hunt it also in the future. The Office is collaborating with FACE precisely for an international management plan and provided data on the Italian wild collection. The collection of the wings of the culled animals in our country continues and the first year recorded some quite interesting results, although it is necessary to increase the sample.
The request to hunters and to the hunting world in general is to collaborate again, since it is useful to arrive the wings of all the subjects taken during the hunting season. The cut must take place at the base of the shoulder: the wings must be opened at least 130 degrees, leaving them to dry for ten days. The place and date of killing must be indicated precisely, without forgetting the padded yellow envelopes to be used for shipping.
