Mr Pietro fiocchi, MEP, has released a note in recent hours after speaking during the meeting of the coordinators of theSEND (Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety). His proposal concerned the food sector, in particular the enhancement of wildlife meat at various levels. Here is what Fiocchi said in this regard: “It is an eco-sustainable choice, respectful for the environment and animal welfare, as well as healthy. All this to facilitate the transition to healthier diets and give them nutritional characteristics adequate and superior to those deriving from intensive farming.
The Commission tells us that European citizens are asking for food that is fresh, healthy, less processed and has a short supply chain. Well, wild game meat meets this need, the fauna that lives free, feeds on what nature offers, acquiring excellent qualities from an organoleptic and nutritional point of view. It has in fact specific characteristics in that rich in essential trace minerals, noble proteins and Omega3, very low fat content, cholesterol free, rich in iron, zinc, vitamin B12 , the meat of wild ruminants also has Omega6.
Game and game must therefore return to occupy an important place in the context of a healthy and natural diet. Wildlife-based catering as well traditional dishes should be encouraged in this sense. My invitation to the Commission and my proposal is that the Farm to Fork Strategy should be explicitly included: 1) the incentive for the consumption of game and game meat; 2) the explicit invitation to the Member States to remove obstacles that in their internal systems stand in the way of creation of a real production chain, from the primary producer who is the hunter, through a sustainable hunting activity, to the final consumer and catering. We need more nature and healthy food, this is an opportunity to be seized ".
