Two days ago, Thursday 21 December 2017, the Palermo Regional Administrative Court has decided to accept the requests of three animal and environmental associations. These are Legambiente, LIPU (Italian Bird Protection League) and WWF, which have demanded the suspension of the council decree of last September 19th, the one who had authorized the hunting within the island of Pantelleria.
The appeal was presented underlining the violation of the regional hunting fauna plan and of the opinion of the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (IPSRA) regarding the Sicilian hunting calendar. The decree of the Councilor for Agriculture, Antonello Cracolici, provided for the withdrawal of the wild rabbit and some birds. The same measure had been adopted by the administrative judges to block hunting in two other Sicilian islands, namely Marettimo e Salina.
According to the applicants' associations, in this way the protection of the local fauna has been restored. The appeal to the Court concerned, among other things, the hunting activity in the territory of Aeolian and in the smaller islands of the Egadi. One of the measures envisaged by the Region of Sicily three months ago was that of do not allow the use of lead shot ammunition in wetlands such as lakes, ponds, swamps and marshes.
