La Campania region has decided to authorize the management by abatement of magpies, crows and foxes in province of Caserta. There were two decrees of the General Directorate of Agricultural Policies that sanctioned these interventions, both with the Casertano Territorial Hunting Area as client. Furthermore, scientific supervision has been entrusted to the Veterinary Faculty of the“Federico II” University of Naples.
The censuses have ascertained the presence of 20 thousand crows e 13 thousand magpies, numbers that refer to the period between 2016 and last year. Populations are in excess and are causing serious damage to maize crops, but not only. Containment will cover 2000 crows e 1500 magpies a year: the use of lead-containing ammunition will be prohibited.
The fox control plan was instead designed to put a stop to the continuous predation of hares, pheasants and gray partridges. The census lasted in this case a month and a half, from February to last April, with 67 specimens observed in the repopulation areas. The maximum number of items that can be withdrawn will be equal to 271, by means of rifles or by trapping. Further details on the staff involved will be provided in the coming weeks.
