"Census of roaring in deer management": this is the title of the conference to be held in just under two weeks, specifically Friday March 18 2016, Bosco Chiesanuova (province of Verona) to speak precisely ofungulate. The event was organized byNational Association of Alpine Zone Hunters (UNCZA) local Federcaccia, together with the Bosco Chiesanuova Alpine Reserve and with the prestigious patronage of the Province of Verona and the Lessinia Regional Natural Park. The meeting will start at 20:30 and will be held at the Council Chamber of the Lessinia Mountain Community.
The speaker will be Alexander Brugnoli, who holds the position of technical coordinator on behalf of the Trentino Hunters Association. The interventions, on the other hand, will be those of Massimo Sauro, number one of the Bosco Chiesanuova Alpine Area, Sandro Flaim, president of the UNCZA, e Ivan Confortini, responsible for the wildlife and environmental protection service of the Province of Verona. The roaring census represents one of the most exploited methods in our country to estimate the populations of the deer from a demographic point of view, in particular when dealing with a rather large forest cover.
In a nutshell, it consists of the count of adult males, which are identified on the basis of the bellowing, that is their vocal emissions, during the reproductive period. In this way it is possible to understand how many there are the breeding males and their percentage in the total population. The subject of deer in this part of Veneto has been current for several years now, at least since there has been a progressive increase, especially in the southern slopes of the Alps, an expansion also favored by the planned releases.
The hunting associations were immediately interested in this phenomenon, activating a management program aimed at identifying the occupied space and its consistencies. The most frequent sightings, also made possible by occasional observations and discoveries, have occurred right in the north-east part of the Bosco Chiesanuova alpine area, with the areas of the Lessinia Park that have become the strategic place in this sense.
This is why such a presence certainly cannot be overshadowed, it is something consolidated and difficult to quantify, but careful monitoring must be guaranteed on a constant basis. The main problems related to the deer are those typical of every ungulate, therefore the damage to agricultural crops (the hilly area of Lessinia is famous for its valuable crops) and road accidents. Furthermore, hunters have not yet gained the necessary and adequate experience with this species.
