Wolves attacking farms, starlings on cultivated fields, wild boars capable of nullifying the sowing or destroying whole crops of legumes: this is what continues to happen throughout Puglia, with dozens of reports from seriously damaged livestock and agricultural businesses. New alarm on the wild animal emergency by Cia Puglia which draws attention to an issue that becomes problematic again due to the lockdown necessary to contain the spread of Coronavirus.
The latest episodes as regards Puglia - the note of the regional CIA specifies - occurred in patches in each of the 6 provinces of the region. The question of coexistence with wolves has been raised several times above all in the Gargano and on the Monti Dauni, in the province of Foggia, in the rural areas located not far from the hills of the Promontory and the Dauno Apennines. Last week, in Lucera in San Giusto, two donkeys were torn to pieces. Wolf attacks have occurred in the northern part of the province of Brindisi.
Wild boars, on the other hand, have recently returned to work in the Bari area and in the province of Taranto, where herds of ungulates have dug holes up to 50 centimeters deep to attack the roots of a citrus grove. "The provincial variations of our organization have been reporting the issue for some time, also through real dossiers that document the negative effects of uncontrolled presence of wildlife on the territory -said the regional president of Cia Puglia, Raffaele Carrabba-. We put forward our proposals to the Puglia Region to begin to structurally address the issue - added Carrabba ”.
“The need to switch from compensation concept to that of a real compensation, adequate to the compensation of the damages actually suffered - continues the president of Cia Puglia - is only one of the issues on the table: the number, growth and presence of wild animals should be monitored, be able to count on in-depth research that also detects the behaviors of different animal species, their movements, nutritional habits, so as to be able to understand how to deal with the problem, with what measures and with a program of actions aimed at minimizing the negative impact of wildlife on agricultural and livestock farms ".
