Enio Agnola, regional councilor of the Democratic Party of Friuli Venezia Giulia, defended theamendment of which he is the first signatory and which includes brand new measures for cages intended for breeding songbirds. According to Agnola, Friuli is at the top in Italy as regards animal welfare, thanks to a very broad and articulated protectionto. The amendment was approved in the course of the settlement of financial statements for 2016 and, among other things, it provides that the cages may also have smaller dimensions than those established by law.
For the councilor there is no bird health risk, who are not detained in conditions of suffering. Among other things, no birds caught in the wild will become part of a singing contest. Agnola also pointed out how difficult it is to understand that a larger cage can be harmful to birds.
Indeed, those who are raised and are not used to the same conditions as those born free they are comfortable in small contexts. Furthermore, the release of the animals in question would result in their certain death. The counselor explained that he shares some concerns, but that the situation is quite particular.
