Hunting in Macedonia: Dream sceneries and authentic wild for an unforgettable experience, this and more is hunting in Macedonia.
I have had a passion for hunting since I was a boy although it was not exactly the most popular sport at home, but the idea of hunting travel came to me relatively recently.
I was browsing in search of some pretty good spot for rock partridge hunting in my area when I came across a travel offer: not a conventional trip of course, but a hunting trip. I immediately call Giovanni, a longtime friend and propose him the adventure.
He is not that you love traveling and flying so much so I already imagined his beautiful "no thanks, I'm busy". You will understand my surprise in hearing his enthusiasm.
The cost of the trip, on the other hand, was more than affordable (it was around 1500 euros) and the stories of those who had already been in Macedonia for hunting were enthusiastic. The next day we already had tickets in hand for Skopje, the capital of Macedonia, not far from a reserve that has been described to us as five stars.
Of course we could have chosen many other locations, for example there was the possibility of organizing for Zajecar where, moreover, you can hunt fabulous African turtledoves, or in Trebinje, not far from Dubrovnik, where you can hunt as well as for cotorne. even to the queen of the woods.
I will tell you that I have not regretted my choice, even if I intend to turn the Macedonian territory like a sock because I assure you, it is fabulous and not just for hunting. We left during the month of November last year and immediately we had the opportunity to discover the fabulous local landscapes. Low hills, wooded areas that have also turned out to be the home of beautiful woodcocks, surprised us right away, but it is of course in the most difficult to reach locations that we have had the most beautiful satisfactions, so the advice is to bring a dog with you. a great breath, which does not disdain to chase some hare.
Once we arrived in the small and characteristic hotel, a local hunter was introduced to us, who during the hunting season accompanies tourists who wish to experience some adventures. Realizing our difficulty in pronouncing his name, he introduced himself to us as Franco, and I'll tell you that the name suited him perfectly. He told us that from the second week of October until the end of December, the hunt for partridges and rock partridges remains open, but that the period chosen by me and Giovanni promised to be really lucky. The guide immediately warned us: once we reached the reserve we would have an authentic hunting experience since in those beautiful hills bordering uncultivated land live real wild, which perfectly know their habitat and do not easily sell their feathers.
And in fact the experience lived alongside Giovanni and our pointing dogs, the authentic whirring and adrenaline of hunting are impossible to forget. The three days of hunting in which we participated all began at dawn: we woke up, had a quick breakfast and began a real climb of those hills that seem, during the sunrise, mountains in all respects. After about half an hour of walking the perfect location was reached: the rocks offered shelter from the wind, not far away there were fabulous plains for pasture and the stone offered unusual rocky hiding places, for the damnation of the hunter.
Of all the days, the unforgettable one was the first. My pointer was enthusiastic about the place and all the scents that came from the surrounding nature. He initially explored the area and after a few minutes it became quieter. Zeus' stop is spectacular, to be enjoyed and the waiting time has passed quite quickly.
When the rock partridge took off, silently, with a zigzag gait I could not help but admire it: I confess it caught me off guard and disappeared shortly after. Of course, after the initial astonishment, the other wonderful rock partridges weren't so lucky. At the end of the day the game bag consisting of partridges and rock partridges was not overflowing with game but decent: not bad as the first day! The celebrations were followed by a solemn sleep and two other fabulous hunting days.
My advice for anyone wishing to organize a trip of this kind is to bring with you a good dog, resistant and stubborn and the right weapon: it is not wrong for those who opt for a 12 or even 20 gauge, comfortable and light to carry with you. self. Don't forget that the climbs are really exhausting, and as much as the coolness helps, a handy weapon is always desired.
