There are only 24 hours to the official start of the ringing season 2018 for scientific purposes at thePonza Island. This is a very important month for the team of CISCA (Italian Center for the Study and Conservation of the Environment), which will make use of valuable volunteers as every year to set up the field of work for the research. The activity is very important on a scientific level and the various species are monitored carefully.
La search for volunteers it is not over yet and we must be willing to be alive even in the event of an abundant migratory flow. As remembered by the managers themselves, this is only an apparently small activity, but it contributes to a bigger project as regards monitoring and conservation. On Friday 9 March 2018 it will pick up where it all left off. The 2018 season will then end on 19st May, so we are talking about two and a half months of extreme interest.
Relevant numbers were recorded last year. The closure of the 2017 season was characterized by the capture of 200 birds: by total number of catches it was the seventh best year since there have been these activities, while 2015 continues to hold its record with 23685 birds captured (an almost double figure if compared with that of twelve months ago).
