The ringing station of thePonza Island has updated the information relating to last days of catches. On Easter Monday the networks were closed due to a new storm that raged in the area. Here is what the volunteers wrote about it: “Our business is up seasonal basis, therefore every closing day represents for us a loss of possible data. Nonetheless, this time, a day off is very welcome, as last week was very busy at the networks. Indeed, the weather was good as well the birds were very abundant day in and day out.
We were able to fill an average of 40-50 pages of our log per day, which means we ringed between 600 and 700 birds per day". In the following hours, things went better: "As the season progresses, the passing species alternate, so every week we welcome at our station to first specimens of the season of various species that we already know well in Ponza.
During this week it was the turn of the dances of migration to open cannareccione, cannaiola, pigliamsche, common dove, the long-awaited bee-eater and the dreaded having it redhead. Why fear having it? Being a predator of insects (it loves locusts) and small birds, it has a beak with a hooked hook at the tip. This, if properly tightened on the tender skin of the net extractor or ringer, can cause a sharp pain, if not a good wound ".
