Hunt in Macerata: Legambiente requests a meeting with the Province proposing the cancellation of the hunting season for ungulates.
Legambiente sent a letter to the President of the Province of Macerata asking for a meeting with the Provincial Administration aimed at discussing the opening of the roe deer hunting also asking for the cancellation of the opening of the hunting season for ungulates.
The president of Legambiente Marche, Luigino Quarchioni, explained, “We believe that there is no deer emergency such as to justify the opening of the hunt. Given the snow and drought that characterized this year, the absence of reporting of damage to agriculture and, for us, the insufficient monitoring of the animal population, we think that the provincial administration can cancel the provision and reopen, instead, the monitoring of the species for a sufficiently long period, rather than speeding up the times as we have seen done on this occasion ".
According to Legambiente, the estimates of the ungulate populations presented show that the average density in the area, despite being higher than the minimum required by regional legislation, is still lower than that suggested by ISPRA, the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research.
According to ISPRA, for a correct wildlife-hunting management, the sampling must be commensurate with the size of the population on the entire provincial territory; moreover, already in the month of August, Ispra had issued a document asking for the limitation of hunting activities in consideration of the problematic climatic situation.
Finally Quarchioni concluded by hoping, “We therefore hope that the Province will listen to us and accept our request for a meeting. The management of the fauna is a fundamental element in maintaining the environmental balance, for the protection of biodiversity and for the protection of the entire ecosystem; a heritage that must certainly be managed but in the best way ".
