The MEP Marco Dreosto, together with colleagues Conte, Campomenosi, Panza, Gancia, Lizzi, Casanova, Basso, Adinolfi, Ceccardi, Baldassarre and Da Re, asked the European Commission to provide rapid, specific guidelines to Member States, in order to encourage the breeding of local indigenous breeds. Dreosto declares this in a note sent by Strasbourg “The EU livestock population is now reduced to very few productive breeds, selected for rapid growth or for the best production of milk or eggs.
Many marginal, more rustic and adaptable breeds can deliver high quality products but to a lesser extent and in longer times they are or have already been abandoned, due to the high costs of maintenance, relaying or for difficulties related to the commercial chain.
Our country in particular is losing a zootechnical biodiversity unique in the world, which includes breeds of mammals and poultry that have adapted to the selection under the most diverse environmental conditions, climatic and food, an expression of the social, historical and cultural memory of many rural communities ". Dreosto also asked if and how the Commission intends to support small farms or young breeders to undertake and support a breeding process aimed at minor breeds.
