The Forestry and Fauna Service of Autonomous Province of Trento authorized the killing of 75 cormorants in the area of competence to put a stop to damage caused by birds near rivers. This selection hunting was prepared following the European legislation to the letter and after obtaining the favorable opinion of ISPRA. The cormorants can be killed in various river areas, in particular along the Adige river, near the dams and confluences with the streams.
Training courses were also organized to better prepare the hunters, so much so that the provincial hunting association has actively collaborated. The goal is to cull no more than 75 cormorants per year for a total period of five years. The first sightings of this species in Trentino dates back to 1993, with the first and scarce specimens limited to Lake Toblino.
Cormorants are mainly present in the northern region between October and April, before moving to the nesting areas. The census carried out by the Province last January (the data refer to the first ten days of December 2016) highlighted the presence of 170 specimens at the mouth of the Avisio, 180 on Lake Toblino and 63 on Caldonazzo, without forgetting the 15 around Lake Ledro.
