La Italian Confederation of Farmers (CIA) di Torino launched an important appeal with the emblematic title: "A nutria does not keep company". The aim of the agricultural association is to open its eyes to these rodents, which are often considered nice and good company. In fact, it is about a serious threat to agriculture and for the stability of embankments, bridges and roads. For all these reasons, CIA Turin asked for confirmation of the containment plan that was approved eight months ago from the former Province. The press release of the confederation became necessary after the words spoken a few days ago by Albert Unia, municipal councilor for the environment, according to which containment has no reason to exist and should be reformulated avoiding the gory methods.
In a nutshell, Unia has asked for the culling of the otters to be canceled. The sympathy and company of these animals disappears when one thinks of dangers to the economy and public safety: crops are at risk, consequently CIA Torino has called for a clear resolution of the problem, before reaching the environmental emergency.
Awareness is that the struggle for containment will continue for other years, although the association is unsure whether government budgets guarantee resources for unforeseen expenses. The otters would cause in our country 20 million euros in damage to agriculture and infrastructures: in Turin, on the other hand, there are 10250 copies. CIA is collecting all the useful information to compose a white paper to be sent to the mayor and councilor.
