Le Recognized Hunting Associations (Federcaccia, Enalcaccia, AnuuMigratoristi, Arci Caccia, National Free Hunting Association, Italcaccia, Game Producers Authority) and the National Hunting and Nature Committee (CNCN), gathered in the Unitary control room, aware of the gravity of the security issue, believe that the best way to deal with it, also to avoid ideological exploitation, is to act in total transparency by first communicating the numbers on the victims of the last hunting season. There are 12 confirmed deaths during the 2018-2019 season (from 1 September 2018 to 30 January 2019), with a decrease of 33% compared to the previous one.
For greater clarity, the fatal accidents involving hunters were 10 (83% of the total), while those involving non-hunters were 2 (17% of the total). During the same time span the injured were 50, with a decrease of 17% compared to 2017-18. The injuries of the last season involved hunters for 74% of cases (37 injured) and for the remaining 26% of non-hunters cases (13 injured). In commenting on these numbers, the Control Room reiterates how even one death while hunting is unacceptable, and undertakes to continue the widespread safety awareness activities, which in recent years have led to a steady decline in accidents, despite ideologically adverse information campaigns that have generated a distorted perception of the issue.
In this regard, it is equally undeniable that any human activity, even the apparently safer one, involves a percentage of risk that can be lowered, but not completely eliminated. Furthermore, in the period in which strictly regulated and scientifically sustainable hunting activity is permitted, Italian hunters are committed daily to the protection of biodiversity, managing the territory, the environment and fauna, watching over poaching, operating at the service of public administrations free of charge in environmental control and restoration operations.
