The project "Scolopax Overland" is now in its seventh season and the results need to be explored to know the new developments regarding the woodcocks wintering in our country. In fact, it is the study of these birds through the satellite radio telemetry: the new information has proved invaluable and useful for understanding and managing the species. First of all, it should be emphasized, as explained byFedercaccia Bird Migration Office, which were two woodcocks released during the catches of the 2016-2017 season, with the birds that have completed the pre-nuptial migration.
The specimens were renamed "Rosa" and "Foggia 2", sponsored respectively by the ATC Caserta and the ATC Foggia. They have now reached the breeding sites in Western Russia, with journeys between 2500 and 3300 kilometers to be precise.
The woodcocks started from Piedmont and the Gargano, while the sites chosen are important wintering areas, chosen for the characteristics of the catches and survival of the marked subjects. Meanwhile, the Office's commitment to studying the species continues: after participating in the workshop on Pico Island in Portugal, these data further enhance knowledge on the subject.
