gesturi (province of Medio Campidano) and more precisely thePlateau of the Giara hosted the first edition of Sardinian Federcaccia Championship on woodcocks. The event took place over the weekend of 13 and 14 February last and the association has announced the results and the success found. The organization was managed by the provincial section of Oristano of the Italian Federation of Hunting, together with Federcaccia Sardegna and three other provincial sections, that of Sassari, that of Cagliari and that of Nuoro. Both days were characterized by numerous meetings and by more than positive and convincing evidence.
The judges were called to evaluate the 34 subjects who presented themselves and had the opportunity to judge the habitat chosen for the race as ideal, emphasizing in particular the loyalty and sportsmanship of each competitor. Federcaccia's note also highlighted the excellent contribution of Province and Municipality of Gesturi, entities that have granted the necessary authorizations. The Sardinian territory in which to hunt woodcocks has been defined magnificent and insidious at the same time, as it was not easy for the dogs to find their way around.
There were two final rankings, one for each category in the race. Between continental races (Italian and foreign) Gianpiero Camoglio triumphed with Epagneul Breton Laika: the podium was then completed by Sergio Murru with Bella and Antonio Figus with Ebril de Keranlouan (another Epagneul Breton). In "English Breeds" category instead Denis Pisu excelled with Tirso, while the second place went to Silverio Lai with Touran. The "bronze" in this category recorded an ex-aequo, as Maurizio Mereu with Roval Toa and Walter Merlo with Tai won it.
The geographical choice could not have been more appropriate. La Giara is a basaltic type plateau and has an area of 42 square kilometers, with a maximum height of 550 meters above sea level (the other municipalities are Genoni, Tuili and Setzu). It is famous for the millenary conservation of the Cavallino, a unique and wild species in Europe. The first Sardinian Championship took place in a terrain rich in various animal species, in particular the 64 birds, including we can remember the buzzard and the imperial crow, as well as lots of wildlife: the Sardinian wild boar and the Sardinian fox frequent this plateau, therefore it will not be difficult to organize the second edition, in the hope that it will be exciting and uncertain until the last one as happened two weeks ago.
