Il first island championship on woodcocks it is not the only current topic concerning hunting in Sardinia. The wild boar hunt has in fact recently ended, but we continue to talk about the possibility of a midweek opening on Thursday. A group of hunters of Orani, in the province of Nuoro, is more than favorable to this idea and, as explained by La nuova sardegna, there is a Facebook group that is experiencing growing success in terms of membership. According to these hunters, the boar hunt on Thursday should be supported because the decision of the Regional Fauna Committee to expand the hunting calendar last November is based on precise reasons and not on selfish reasons.
Such a clear and convinced choice obviously has reasons. First of all, the Oranian hunters believe it is necessary stop the increasing number of road accidents, since every month there are about ten in the province of Nuoro, without forgetting the explicit requests of the local farmers. As happens in other parts of Italy, in fact, the unstoppable increase of specimens on the territory causes incalculable damage to cultivated land.
In addition, and certainly not a secondary detail, ungulates are carriers of dangerous diseases such as swine fever and trichinella (it can be transmitted to humans through the consumption of meat). Last, but not least, are the damage to other animal species, given that we are talking about a nest predator and the partridge population has recently decreased precisely because of the wild boars. The enlargement a few months ago by the Fauna Committee was the result of an explicit request from the Italian Confederation of Farmers (CIA).
In practice, other associations had also given their consent to meet the needs of the primary sector, but big game companies had proved opposed to this opening. According to their point of view, midweek hunting would have violated a long-established tradition and created a series of problems, in particular those relating to the organization of the hunts, without forgetting the recovery of the dogs (it takes several days to do so). Then there are those who opposed it due to the absence of the necessary health checks that take place on a regular basis with the ASL. However, the entire hunting season in Sardinia was characterized by hunting on Thursdays. Orani hunters are as convinced as ever of their positions and are confident that the 2016-2017 calendar will follow the same example.
