We have been witnessing, stunned, for over a year now, a succession of twists and turns on hunting by the institutions, first of all the regional one. In particular, instead of defending biodiversity and valuable crops, the "competent" regional councilor, Roberto Morroni, he seems very committed to following off-screen directions and continually despising the hunting world which is second to none in terms of competence in the matter. The last "pearl", in order of time, given to us by the councilor is the launch - in the third commission - of the new regulation for selection hunting, which also included the wild boar species among those that can be taken through this type of hunting. Given that Umbrian hunting federation has no prejudice towards any form of huntingprovided that it is sustainable, regulated and inserted in a broader general framework both from an administrative and scientific point of view, we are nevertheless obliged to underline some absurdities.
The first, which immediately catches the eye, is the possibility of providing no longer only qualified hunters, that is to say trained by the regional body or by its second level branch, but also other hunters, provided they are accompanied by at least one qualified. This means, in layman's terms, opening the doors to illegal buying and selling of wild boar hunting in selective form, allowing the qualified hunter to take an inexperienced one with him and "cover" the killing thanks to his own simple presence. Far West stuff and, above all, rich stuff who do not want to follow the rules and study, as it is right to do and how each of us must do before taking up a rifle with precision optics.
Another absurdity, unjustified and unjustifiable, is the assessor's attack on the hunted, that is to say the most widespread hunting practice in relation to wild boar species, because it is more effective and profitable, which allows - every year - to cull about 18 thousand animals on the regional territory used for programmed hunting, that is to say with the exception of parks, oases and state-owned land, which have now become real open-air pigsties for this prolific and invasive species. Well, according to Morroni, the hunted it would make matters worse for the species by allowing it to proliferate indiscriminately!
In support of this madness Morroni cites unspecified "scientific data", which would have been produced by the higher institute for environmental protection and research, which would certify that the hunt "turned out to be an ineffective tool for containmenton the contrary, it has made things worse, while the effectiveness of the selection hunt has also been confirmed ”. Well, we still want to grant the councilor the benefit of good faith, attributing only genuine incompetence and ignorance in hunting matters. This is because anyone who knows our world at least knows that every withdrawal tool has some well-defined characteristics, and that the effects of the hunt - from a numerical point of view - are infinitely superior to those of selection. Which, however, plays a very important role if used in some areas and in some specific periods.
This is why, with a view to sustainability and peaceful coexistence of all stakeholders, it is now more than urgent to create a management plan for the wild boar species that outlines the short and medium-term objectives, defines the various types of huntable areas - because Trasimeno cannot be considered in the same way as the Apennines - and that establishes the forms of withdrawal that can be exercised in each of the types of areas, with a view to complementarity and not useless dualisms. And this is the third absurdity that we emphasize today, namely the obstinacy with which the "competent" councilor Morroni pursues in his not wanting to devote himself to this general regulation, preferring spot measures that do not even leave the time they find, without contributing in the least to the resolution of the wild boar problem and, above all, despising without any reason the efforts of the Umbrian hunters who up to now have also voluntarily committed themselves to preventive interventions and that, as every year, continue to pay over 2 million euros into the coffers of the Region for regional concession fees alone.
