As disclosed by the Italian Federation of Hunting, the Ministry of the Environment has invited the Hunting Offices, ISPRA and the Ministry of Agriculture to rigorously implement the management measures concerning hunting of the wild turtledove. In this way it was avoided the pre-opening authorization as far as this species is concerned. According to the association, however, in the letter the Ministry justifies the practice adopted before the European Commission and confirmed by the opinions of the Institute, namely the authorization of two days of pre-opening turtle dove hunting.
The same goes for the reduction of the maximum seasonal game bag up to 20 head. Despite these clarifications, it is not possible to give the green light to the hunting sampling. It is truly amazing that this recommendation comes to an end an articulated and long period in which it is confirmed that the hunt for turtledove can reasonably be practiced only in the first ten days of September, since the same Ministry recognizes that the migration of the species ends in the third ten days of the same month.
That is, in essence, the Ministry says it considers hunting for the species is feasible, but would effectively prohibit it by allowing the collection when the turtle doves have already gone away. FIDC cannot share the arguments and wants to demonstrate how turtle dove hunting is sustainable. The contradictory position of the ministry risks creating a crisis dialogue and collaboration just reached.
