Scientific data
The recent pronouncement of the Council of State on the Tuscan Hunting Calendar for the 2022-2023 hunting season, it highlighted, among the various aspects we have already dealt with previously, the importance of scientific data on the various species subject to hunting and in particular on migratory birds. For over ten years, our association at national level but also with the contribution of our regional structure and passionate volunteers, has been actively engaged in scientific research with specific projects, aimed at collecting data useful for the knowledge and maintenance of the species subject to hunting, within the regional hunting calendars.
Studies and surveys
The woodcock, one of the first species to be studied and surveyed, still today represents one of the most fascinating and in some ways mysterious migratory species. The collection and delivery of the wings of downed woodcocks contributes in substantial terms to helping this need for knowledge, aimed not only at sustainable hunting but more generally at the correct conservation practices of the species. For what has been described, we therefore return to ask for the commitment of all Tuscan hunters, in order to allocate as many wings as possible of the woodcocks taken and those that will be shot down in this final phase of the hunting season, to the GIFT WINGS project, preparing them and keeping them in special envelopes also available in our territorial offices. The wings, in the manner indicated, can be delivered or delivered to the offices themselves or directly to Federcaccia Toscana-Unione Cacciatori Toscani in Via Benedetto Dei n°19, 50127 Florence.
Information gathering
Furthermore, we want to take this opportunity to remind all passionate detectorists and simple hunters of the importance of providing for the recovery and return of any "satellite devices" found on downed woodcocks. In fact, in recent years, thanks to the technical and economic commitment of the Italian Hunting Federation and its Studies and Research Office, these devices have been applied to dozens of subjects in order to study their erratic and migratory movements. Any recovery is of particular importance for the collection of indispensable information contained in the device and for its possible reuse on other subjects.
