La Grouse Commission ofAssociation of Trentino Hunters announced that on Thursday 3 August 2017 there will be the summer census of the ptarmigan, to be precise in locality Rosetta, near San Martino di Castrozza (province of Trento). This is a very important and above all very close appointment, given that we are talking about just 48 hours away.
In Trentino Alto Adige the habitat of this species extends from the upper limit of the wood up to over 3 thousand meters. The ptarmigan prefer above all the slopes of medium-high altitude: in the summer, then, the grouse prefers northern exposures, since it loves the cold and thermal stress can be nothing short of harmful. For nine years now, summer censuses have been carried out in the Trentino area, specifically using pointing dogs.
Usually the number of dogs is variable and goes from a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 6. The census usually concerns some small portions of the areal: obviously the activity turned out to be decisive for studying and deepening the species. In addition, the summer census will be compared with the densities recorded in the spring in view of the start of the new hunting season.
